Logan Sork Film Reviews
Best Movies of 2018
2018 was a great year for movies. Despite alot of my most anticipated releases being pretty good (though some were very dissapointing), there were alot of films that I didn't thnk would've ended up here. Despite my best efforts, there are so many films being released at such a rapid rate that I can't manage to see every single film that is released. As a result, I am only basing my list on films that I have seen, not the ones declared the "best" by popular opinion. Also, this is just my opinion since decarling the films on this list the best is truly subjective process.
With that in mind, here's my list of the best films of 2018!
Let's start things off with...
With that in mind, here's my list of the best films of 2018!
Let's start things off with...
#10: Vice
. While this film may not be as subtle as others on this list, I cannot deny this film’s great combination of entertainment and hard edge political satire. With some truly spectacular performances, sharp dialogue and a hard-hitting message, Vice is every but as entertaining as it is informative and is something that every American citizen should see at least once in their lifetime.
#9: Mission: Impossible- Fallout
It may not add anything new to the action genre in terms of plot, but by god was this movie a blast from start to finish. With some of the best action sequences I’ve ever seen, as well as the excellent performances and technical elements, Mission: Impossible- Fallout may very well be the peak of the franchise and action films in general.
#8: Green Book
An unusually lighthearted approach to some heavy subject matter could’ve derailed this film. Thankfully, it takes it’s time to explore the topic of race relations in a surprisingly nuanced way. Couple that with a tale of two unlikely friends and a pair of charismatic leads, and Green Book manages to be just as fun as it is thought provoking.
#7: BlacKkKlansman
While I’m not usually a fan of Spike Lee’s work, BlacKkKlansman is both entertaining and powerful as it utilizes it’s true life story to accomplish many goals. Not only does the film entertain through some fantastic writing and performances, but it also manages to get across a lot of problems that were relevant in the 1970’s that are unfortunately still relevant today.
#6: Aquaman
While Aquaman is the textbook definition of a “popcorn movie”, the film makes up for the lack of substance through sheer size and spectacle. With dazzling visual effects, this is easily one of the best-looking films I’ve seen in some time. Add to that the great characters, action sequences and sense of adventure and you’ve got yourself a visually stunning and imaginative old school adventure film that is anything but boring.
#5: Bad Times at the El Royale
A classic who done it set up with a few twists thrown in to help spice things up, Bad Times at the El Royale brings clever storytelling and brilliant performances to help shepherd an edge of your seat thrill ride that will have your attention through every twist and turn.
#4: Annihilation
Annihilation is not your typical epic sci-fi film. Instead it is a mysterious and at times terrifying in depth look at the ways we are impacted by certain events in our lives and how those events change us for better or worse. The film also leaves a lot open for interpretation, which is also something not found in many films of this period, making Annihilation a true standout.
#3: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is everything a comic-book film should be and also so much more. Yes, it has the typical comic book origin, but also has well developed characters, a unique animation style and an emotionally resonant message at it’s core. This is truly one of the best superhero films I’ve ever seen and is a real treat to anyone who is a fan of superheroes, animation or just great movies period.
#2: Bohemian Rhapsody
While a lot of people have called this movie out for not going deep enough, I though the film went the perfect amount of distance into Freddie Mercury’s private life without making it the main focus of the film. Instead, the film focuses on what Mercury wanted the people to focus on, his musical talent and career, and succeeds spectacularly in doing so. Bohemian Rhapsody has enough fantastic concert performances, character moments and a career defining performance from Rami Malek to entertain not only fans of Queen, but people looking for a great story in general.
#1: First Man
So many films about historical events focus on the event itself, leaving one particular question in everyone’s head- what about the people involved? First Man chooses to play its story as a gripping drama rather than another space mission movie, allowing for a personal look into the Neil Armstrong that has you emotionally invested from start to finish. This film is nearly perfect in every single way. From the performances and direction to the musical score and visual effects, First Man succeeds on nearly every level while leaving viewers with an emotionally gripping story about the man involved in one of the most iconic events in the world.
Well there you have it- my best films of 2018!
